Cajon Pass (McDonald’s)

Day 25 – 5/22/11 – 20 miles (352)

I awoke around 11pm last night to someone shining a headlamp in my face. Only it wasn’t a headlamp, it was headlights. A caravan jeeps driven by LDRs (Local Drunken Rednecks) was headed up the jeep road of which we were camped on a pullout of. They stopped just beyond us to attempt a steep and bumpy hill climb. All failed, but it made for an exciting show to watch from our sleeping bags. After an hour or so they moved on, and we resumed sleep, now with two more campmates, Patch and Crumbs, who were camped on the actual road and nearly run over.

Now onto this morning. Motivation sure makes for fast pace. We hiked the 10 miles to McDonald’s in 2h45m, arriving half an hour before they start serving lunch. With much willpower, I waited. In the end, I ate a cheeseburger, 14 mcnuggets, a large fries, an iced coffee, and a small soda (refilled twice). I felt awful. Three trips to the McBathroom later, and I was feeling better enough to be contemplating a shake or McFlurry. I wisely resisted. Mind you, my consumption only amounted to around 1700 calories. K-bomb downed over 3000.

After the fast food ordeal, we managed to go on another 10 miles, including a 2300 foot climb. Tomorrow we should make it into Wrightwood where we will resupply for the next leg.
