Day 63 – 6/29/11 – 13 miles (906)
Midday yesterday the wind picked up and the clouds rolled in. Around 11pm the hail, sleet, and snow started. Knowing we only had 13 miles to town, we packed up wet and headed out into the storm. The first few miles went easily enough, but eventually we lost trail. We knew we needed to be along the contour of a ridge, but up and down we searched, unable to find the actual PCT. As we became wetter and colder, and started to worry, Roadrunner spotted someone high above us on the slope and called out to him. It was Jamz! We climbed up to join him on the trail and ended up following him all the way to our destination at Red’s Meadow. Jamz is amazing at picking out a route over snow and ending up right on trail, despite fresh snow covering up old tracks. We were very lucky to have run into him; it would have likely taken us hours longer at best.
A few bus rides later we are now warm and drying out in Mammoth Lakes. We’ll zero at least tomorrow, maybe the next day too. Oh, and Moccasin is back!
I love Jamz too!
Yes, and Ninja pointed out that I left out a very important part of the story. When we first reached Jamz on the trail, he handed out Snickers bars to everyone.
