Day 115 – 8/20/11 – 24 miles (1861)
It turned really really windy last night, and I ended up with a blown down tent and grit swept all over me, but it was worth it for the sunrise over the lake. (Sorry, photos only on my real camera.)
I realized early on yesterday the Crater Lake boat tour was logistically infeasible, but I really wanted to go on that boat ride. So when we reached the road that goes to the boat dock at 8:45am, I decided to give it until 9am to try to hitch a ride the miles to the boat dock trailhead (Ninja and Roadrunner kept heading north). At 8:58 I got my ride! Thanks to a new and complicated ticketing system, the earliest boat I could get on didn’t leave until 11am. But following the advice of my college band professor, Dennis Glocke, which I apply to all life situations, not just music concerts at Penn State, “It’ll never be closer, it’ll never be cheaper. You’ve got to go.”
It was a pleasant ride, and I’m glad I took the time to do it. I was only able to take the standard 2 hour loop around the lake tour, and I’d still like to someday take the boat that let’s you get off at Wizard Island.
I thankfully got a hitch back to the trail quickly, for I had 21 miles to go to catch up with Ninja and Roadrunner. I may have set a personal speed record, racing around Mt Thielsen to beat the impending thunderstorm and darkness. I got to camp by 8pm, not bad considering the 5 hour boat related diversion.
I read this to Lester. He is still trying to figure out how I know what you posted and the current weather forecast from this little device I can hold in my hand. You know how it goes. He wants to know when you will write your book about your trip.
