As the Trail Turns

Day 26 – 5/18/13 – 26.6 mi (493.7)

Beautiful scenery all day! We did a lot of walking high on the edges of mesas overlooking the surrounding valleys. The route was well marked with cairns and it was great to be off roads. However, the ground was very sandy and we frequently had to dump out our shoes. We were thankful for the cloud cover which kept the temperatures fairly cool. Yesterday LoveNote’s thermometer measured 100F in the afternoon.

Toward the day’s end we arrived at Jones Canyon spring. The water there had some swimming larvae and/or tadpoles, but otherwise looked good. The dead coyote rotting 25 ft away however, was so pungent I’m certain the smell has traveled through the Internet along with this photo.

We are camped just shy of 14 miles from the town of Cuba. After dinner entertainment included sewing a patch we found in the gutter outside the Dollar Tree in Grants onto Strider’s hat. He is now Dion. That’s Dr. Dion to you.

They hadn’t been done yet when I asked at 8:50pm, just ten minutes before hiker midnight. I’m now told she did 10!

  1. Hi to all you hickers! I am Aaron’s grandma and live in Butler, Penna. Just 30 miles north of Pitts.

We are loving your pictures and so glad you are watching out for Aaron. It is great to have details and pictures – we never had them before when Aaron was hiking. Just to clarify the apple dumplings started here in Pa. and have moved on to Ohio. Good luck to all of you.
