Day 29 – 5/21/13 – 24.2 mi (542.8)
It was a cold night. Really, really cold. Everyone else was ok, but my butt was cold enough to keep me awake most of the night. I foolishly put on dry socks this morning only to have to walk across the meadow, which had turned into a field of ice crusted puddles overnight. I quickly lost the “guess which tufts of grass are solid enough to step on” game.
After a few miles through the high meadows we descended through a changing variety of forest.
At lunch, Stryder compared my sleeping bag to his (we have the same model) and determined that mine isn’t lofting correctly and that’s why I was so cold. I’ll have to look into solutions in town.
We had one big climb up some colorful cliffs before dropping again to a creek where we are camped for the night. It was a nice easy day of walking for us, and Sweetfish caught up while we were making dinner. Tomorrow we’ll get to Ghost Ranch where we plan to zero!

Katie! Tara and I just hiked at Ghost Ranch last Friday with Carla and her husband, Scott!! It would have been wild if we had run into you there!
No way! I just got to ghost ranch a couple hours ago. I’m planning to stay for a rest day here. Beautiful place!
Bummer about the sleeping bag! Mine did that too a while back…it was just dirty. I ended up washing it with down wash (Nikwax) and running it through the dryer a few times on low with my shoes in there to beat the loft back into it. It was a pain in the ass, but it fixed my problem. I hope yours is an easy fix, too; a cold sleeping bag definitely sucks!
I just washed the bag before this hike, but I’m thinking maybe it didn’t get rinsed enough or I didn’t dry it long enough? If I get to a good enough laundromat I’ll try rewashing and drying.
