Day 22 – 5/14/13 – 14.4 mi (396.6)
We got up early to finish a 14 mile roadwalk through a canyon into Grants. We met some mountain bikers on the way in who recommended a diner next to the McDonalds on the edge of town. We all wanted milkshakes, but had to settle for floats and giant breakfast platters.
The Mumms, who cache water for hikers, also were kind enough to pick us up and take us to the cheap motel at the other end of town where all the hikers have been staying. We joined Sweetfish to cram 5 people into his room.
Ninja was first in line to shower so she could make a trip to the clinic to address a rash she’s had on her leg since day 2 and which we’ve been affectionately referring to as her MRSA. About 10 minutes into the shower, hair lathered in shampoo, the water cut out. We called the front desk and were informed that the water had been shut off while someone was fixing a leaking pipe; it would be back on in 30 minutes. So Ninja waited. Over an hour later she gave up and rinsed off with what water we all had left in our bottles so she could be ready in time for Mrs. Mumm to take her to the doctor.
After a few hours, the water did come back on. In the meantime, I did my resupply shopping next door at Walmart, and a contingent of us got milkshakes at Denny’s. We got to meet Rambler for the first time and he shared with us some good beer from a local monastic brewery.
Ninja returned with pajama pants to hike in to protect her legs from sun and a prescription cream. Let’s hope this does the trick!
The Daily Ninjup Report
She did 6 in the morning.
Ninja, it seems you are being tested; as all great ninjas will be. Hope the rash goes away soon and that it isn’t to painful or aggravating! It is really great how helpful so many people have been to all of the hikers this season. It must be pretty amazing to all of the locals to see so many thru-hikers this year. Thanks for sharing the Adventure!
