Day 24 – 5/16/13 – 26.6 mi (443.7)
This morning began with a quick summit of Mt Taylor at 11,301ft. We had great views from the top and on the way down the north side encountered our first snow of the CDT! Actually, we were once again on an alternate route, which we are calling the JLT (after Jonathan Ley who created the maps we’re using). The real CDT skips the summit and circles around the mountain. Lame.
We stocked up on water at a spring late in the morning. The next water is 25 miles away. I tried the “camel up” strategy by drinking a full liter in just a few minutes while sitting at the spring. I do not like this method. I had a belly full of sloshing water for several miles.
After lunch we rejoined the official CDT and spent the rest of the day on a monotonous dirt road. I’ve had enough of the dirt roads and am looking forward to Colorado where I expect more actual trail. Ninja is looking forward to a mocha frappe at the McDonald’s in Cuba.
