Day 35 – 5/27/13 – 10.5* mi (645.1)
An hour into walking this morning our party split. Ninja, Sweetfish and I opted to walk the lower JLey alternate route to Cumbres pass, while Wired, LoveNote, and Stryder took the official CDT. About 9am, we hit the Colorado border!
Close to the pass, we followed the train tracks in. Apparently the train that runs on this route is very popular with train enthusiasts. We’d been hearing that the hitch to Chama was difficult, but we got a ride within 5 minutes of arriving at Cumbres pass.
We got to town by lunchtime and a couple hours later Wired, LoveNote and Stryder arrived, courtesy of Beacon, who was waiting at the trailhead with a rental car for them! Several other hikers came into town over the afternoon and we had a great afternoon and evening hanging out and consuming New Mexican and Coloradan beers in front of our motel rooms.

*my best guess. I have no mileage data for the route I took today.
Yaay!!!! Much love to all of you!
You are hiking oh so fast! One state down, holy cow. May your route be free of cows for a few days. Enjoy your new shoes DNR.
congrats, guys!! by the looks of it, there’s no insane caterpillar infestation happening this year? last year, the whole stretch from ghost ranch to the border was known as the “caterpillar deluge trail.”
No caterpillars this year! We have started to see the beetle kill once we hit CO though.
Yeah! Congrats on 1 state down!Good Luck in Colorado.
