Day 44 – 6/5/13 – 18.2 mi (766.9)
CDT: Continental Divide Trail
CDT: Constantly Disappearing Trail
CDT: Consistently Demoralizing Trail
Today was a rough day for some of us. When I got out of my tent this morning, I scraped my ice axe against the tent beak and ripped a hole in it. Tonight I leaned too close to my cook pot with my puffy jacket on and burned holes in both my sleeves. Wired and LoveNote both ripped their pants, and LoveNote lost her buff. Stryder had a really good day today and says he’s sorry.
The morning started with Knife’s Edge. Actually Knife’s Edge was nothing, it was the traverse after it that was difficult. Stryder led the way and quickly kicked steps in the steep walls of snow. The rest of us folIowed much more cautiously (slowly), but succeeded in avoiding death.
The morning miles were slow, and we had to turn up the pace this afternoon in order to hit the daily mileage we need to make for this leg. Much of the trail was flooded with water, so our feet are constantly wet. You usually can’t walk next to the trail because the willow are so dense, and they are often overgrown into the trail. My ankles are raw from postholing and I’m reminded of it with every willow branch scraping into my legs.
But enough with the complaints. There was plenty of beautiful scenery today, the weather was nice, and my abs are sore from all the laughs shared with the gang. It’s a good day to be on the CDT.
