In the 11th Hour

Day (-1) 6/24/15

All my gear laid out a full 36 hours before my flight. I have never been this organized before.

I thought I was really on schedule with my planning and preparations for this trip.  Aside from discovering less than a week ago that my pack was too small, I put a lot of thought into my gear and preparations.  I finished my route planning several weeks ago, created GPS tracks for myself (not an easy task), got my gear ready and packed all my food drops.
Then this morning (I leave tomorrow morning), I was looking over the bus schedule online to check some times for possible sightseeing at the end of my trip if time permits, and discovered all the buses to the interior of Iceland are closed until further notice due to late melt road conditions… which means I have no way of sending myself resupplies… which means my entire route has gone to shit.

It’s possible that the buses will open back up by the time I start my hike, but I have no way of knowing right now.  I’m just gonna have to roll with it and adjust my itinerary on the fly.  Weee!!!

20oz worth of maps. This ain't a light hike.
20oz worth of maps. This cat toy is not going with me.

Thankfully, the buses do not impact my plans for the first few days which are sure to be a blast.  I will be meeting up with Squatch and Wing It for some touristing and hiking around Hornstrandir (northwest fjords), where if we are lucky we may spot an arctic fox!

I plan to blog daily on my traverse, assuming that happens, though posts may be significantly delayed when I’m without service.  Also, I now have a Delorme inReach and will be sharing my camping location each night (this is not dependent on cell service).
