Hveravellir

Iceland Sea to Sea – Day 3
7/9/15
26.3 miles (83.5 miles)

It got really cold last night. Cold enough that I woke up this morning to sleet hitting my tent.  I was quick to get up though, eager to get the remaining road miles to Hveravellir the heck over with. It was cold, windy and misty all morning. Just miserable.

I wish someone had been there to laugh at me as I tried put on my groundsheet/poncho in the wind.

13 some miles later I finally made it into Hveravellir with its boardwalks around steam vents, bus loads of tourists and, thank goodness, little cafe with hot coffee. I found Wing It and we ate our lunches while I took a good long rest and posted blogs. She had a good long night of sleep and got her feet all taped up.

We set out to follow a trail shown on our map, but since we couldn’t find the start, just cross countried for a long while. After a couple of miles we did find cairns, but any patches of “trail” we’re simply a coincidence of previous footprints.

Hveravellir, which is actually pronounced something like “querkler”

Leaving Hveravellir on something resembling trail.

The terrain was tough: lava fields with jagged rocks poking out, uneven mossy lumps, and sand. Thankfully though, the sun came out and it warmed up. As tough as it was on the feet it was still great to be off road!

Lava!

Oh and some snow patches for good measure

Eventually the cairns ran out and we just bee lined it cross country towards a hut indicated on the map. We saw what looked like a house and barn, but not quite where the map indicated a hut. Was this the hut? I don’t know. In the end we decided just to camp. It’s nice out tonight and there’s no need to spend money. And our view from camp isn’t too shabby either.

At one point during the cross country Wing It screamed out very loudly. She had come within i ches of stepping on a ptarmigan sitting on its nest. It moved at the last second and scurried away from its eggs.

It’s actually a Hilleberg Enan – which is almost the same design as a Akto, but with lighter weight fabrics. Good tent!
