Eat my dust

Iceland Sea to Sea – Day 2

I thought the road miles would just fly by, but it turns out they’re kind of exhausting when you are carrying 8 days of food. The rest of my gear is heavier too, in anticipation of the cold and wet and wind. And cold it was today.

I have a hard time keeping my fingers thawed.

Wing It’s feet were really struggling, and at lunch she made the decision to hitch ahead ~30 miles and wait for me there.  This stretch is all on road 35, known as the Kjolur track, with about 1 car passing every 15 minutes during the middle of the day. So, not too busy but annoying because of the dust cloud I have to breath from their path.

On a sheep trail, bus blowing up dust on the road.

Not too much to say about the walk. There were lots of gnats on and off, and the horses and sheep turned into just sheep as the day went on.  There were often sheep trails along the side of the road that I occasionally took instead of the road. The tread is softer but often eroded into a deep narrow channel, making it a bit like tight rope walking. Easier in the feet, but harder on the knees and hips.

I passed a big dammed up glacial lake, Blondulon, and got views of the Hogsjokull and Langjokull glaciers and Kerlingerfjoll mountains, which I’ll be going through in a few days.

Tomorrow I should catch up to Wing It in Hveravellir and we will continue on.
