Hvannadalshnjukur and updates!

1970’s plane crash wreckage on the beach

Good news! While I’ve been touristing, I’ve also been scheming how to salvage the most of my intended thru hike in the time I have left. So my new plan is a north to south sea-to-sea hike, starting tomorrow! The route will start on the Northern coast at the town of Blönduós and be mainly on dirt roads south to Hveravellir, then follow trail and cross country routes down to Landmannalauger and finish on the path originally intended. And, the timing has worked out for Wing It to join me. I totally just threw this route together, so it will be interesting to see how it goes!

Even if I don’t have service to update the blog everyday, you ca follow my progress by checking share.delorme.com/dropnroll

Hiking on Vestmannaeejar

In other good news, I found a camera battery charger. So, I was able to post the days from hiking in Hornstrandir and will update when I have service from the long hike.

While I was majorly depressed the first day or two during the road trip detour,  I’ve turned it around and am happy with what I’ve gotten around to.

Glacier lagoon

This includes climbing Hvannadalsnjukar, Iceland’s highest peak on July 4. It was good to work the legs and do some elevation gain and of course climbing crevasse laden volcanoes is always a exciting! It was actually my first time on a rope team and great practice for future climbs. The route was about 15 miles and 6800′ of gain.

Roping up for a long glacier slog

on the summit! Vatnajokull, Europe’s largest glacier behind me.

Also, here are some puffins I saw. How can you not be happy seeing at these ridiculous looking creatures?

Very nice photos and a very amazing trek across the snow and ice. Beautiful country for sure. I really liked the bluey photo of Glacier Lagoon and also the one of you at the Basalt rock. Now I just have to give you props on all the place names, I bet that sends spell check into a fit!
