Thru Hiker Card

Day 40 – 4/22/16
23.8 map / 24.6 GPS miles
631.1 / 674.2 miles total

Today was a long sandy road slog with a few bits of cross country mixed in. The miles came very slowly in the hot sun and strong breeze.

Just before lunch, I lost my thru- hiker card. I was truckin’ on the road walk, probably a good 10 minutes ahead of Bubs and Joey when I came upon a vacationing family at their base camp, complete with dome tents and hammocks. We chatted for a bit and discussed my route (just this section, not the whole Hayduke). They kindly asked if I needed any water. I did not but thanked them. It was not until I walked away that I realized my foolish mistake: I had my perfect opportunity to Yogi some beer, and I blew it. When Bubs and Joey caught up at lunch time, they also mentioned stopping to chat with the family. I lamented my poor performance, and just at that moment, Bubs produced 2 cans of beer from her pack! Joey has the same. Thank goodness they were on their game!

We tanked up on our last water until our cache/town at a nasty green slime pond. After filtering, it tastes ok but turned me into a fart machine the rest of the day.

yum!

Camp was hard to find among all the pokey cacti and the wind picked up to obnoxious levels. But we have beer!!

yay!

Yay for claret cup cactus and the beautiful places the Hayduke takes you. (Even if they are scuzzy ponds that your body relys on for the next 30 miles.)
