Day 54 – 5/6/16
?? map / 27.2 GPS miles
816.5 / 889.4 miles total
Due to our whole cache rearrangement, today’s route was all improvised. We took the Arizona Trail north to the park entrance where we retrieved our cache. Immediately after, we discovered the “road” we planned to take back to the Hayduke looked a lot better on the topo map than in person. It was blocked off from the highway and clearly had been out of service for at least a couple decades. There were tons of blowdown and saplings growing up from the roadbed. It would be very slow going. So we decided to take our chances on some other mystery roads to the north, beyond the park boundary. We figured these roads stood a much better chance of being clear since they were in National Forest land, frequently used by hunters and recreationists. Our hunch turned out correct, and we had good dirt road to follow the rest of the day.
Oh, and since we’re back on the north rim, we’re once again at like 9000′ so it was cold all day. And we got several short snow showers. Thankfully it didn’t accumulate. The forecast for the next few days is thunderstorms. Fingers crossed for some warmth tomorrow’s plunge pools.
Ya, that sign sure says it all. Don’t bother comin’ in here if you want to have a bit of fun.
