Day 47 – 4/29/16
21.4 map / 24.0 GPS miles
697.5/ 749.6 miles total
Well today actually turned out pretty great. Dan and Carrot were kind enough to wake up early and schlep us all the way back to the privy they rescued us from 4 days ago. It was still cold but there was less snow on the ground and the sky, while not exactly welcoming, was less threatening.
We finished up a few more miles on the Arizona Trail, which was still easy to follow despite being covered in snow.
Then it was a bunch of road walking along the border of Grand Canyon National Park to get the the Nankoweap trail. Timing was appropriate for us to take lunch at the trailhead, but of course that’s also when the sky decided to snow on us. It was the solid pellet ice-snow that kinda bounces off you instead of sticking and soaking in, so we sucked it up and ate anyway. By the end of lunch it cleared out and we finally got a view of the Grand Canyon!
The afternoon was lovely! It was sunny and sometimes even warm as we dropped over 5,000′ in elevation. And there was real (though not cruise-y) trail the whole way and new exciting views.
We made it to our destination, Nankoweap Creek to camp, which turned out to be beautiful and have the best water of the trail.
So much amazing light! Love that you got to see some peak cactus blooms. Here here for prickly pear and the three of you remembering (if fleetingly) what it feels like to be warm!
You ladies are tough. I use to think I was tough back in my younger days. And I was but I don’t think I was as tough as y’all are. What an adventure!!!!!
These pictures are gorgeous!
Hiking in all kinds O’ conditions. Glad you are in some nicer weather now. Hope it lasts for you three.
Amazing! You guys made my day!
Worth the wait since the last report; keep ’em coming !
