Day 9 – 7/9/18
~17 miles
Big Pete Meadow to Wahoo Lakes
I didn’t sleep all that well last night. I blame it on the “lots of aggressive bears here” note on our maps. (No bear issues were had).
The morning was cool and gloomy and we got rained for an hour or so on the way up to Muir Pass before the skies cleared.
Again, it was so, so different from when I saw this area in 2011. Instead of a snowy tundra, Wanda Lake was dreamy, mirror smooth water with wildflowers lining the shores.
Just after lunch it was time to bid adieu to the PCT. We traversed 3 miles of hillside between 10,700 and 11,000 feet. The route up Snow Tongue Pass was easy enough, though the climb down on the north side was a bunch very steep, very loose crap. There is no tongue of snow, just like Frozen Lake wasn’t frozen.
Dan started to feel extremely fatigued mid afternoon, and had also become very farty. He’s worried he may have giardia (which takes like 10 days to present, so he’d have to have gotten it day 1). We looked over bailout options on the map in case we need them, but hopefully a good night’s sleep will cure his ailments.
That Columbine photo is just lovely. Hope Dan got better.
PINK columbine? I’ve never seen such a shade of columbine. I’m not big on pink, but that’s pretty.
